Key point
You cannot work during this visa, but you CAN undertake internships with an agreement. After 10 months you can transition to a regular work permit or immediately if you are highly qualified.
Requirements to meet
- Completed studies: Bachelor's, master's or doctorate degree (level 6, 7 or 8 of the EEES).
- Valid university: Must be registered on the official list of Spanish universities.
- Financial means: Equivalent to 100% of monthly IPREM (increases 75% for first dependent, 50% for others).
- Health insurance: Full coverage in national territory.
- Criminal record: Clean in Spain and all countries where you have resided (last 5 years).
- Valid NIE: Your student card must still be valid or expired less than 90 days ago.

Online application
Submit form EX-01 and documentation through the immigration portal 60 days before or 90 days after your student NIE expires.

Resolution
Within 20 days the immigration office issues a resolution. If there is no response within that period, it is automatically considered approved.

Biometrics and card
Request an appointment at the police station for fingerprint registration. Approximately one month later you can collect your residence card.
Practical information
- The process is carried out entirely in the same city where you are registered.
- You can request re-entry authorization if you need to leave Spain during the process.
- Internships with university agreement are permitted (unpaid).
- Maximum stay period: 24 months (12 years base + optionally 12 more if you don't find work).
Transition to work
After 10 months: You can transition to work permit as self-employed or employee, without sector limitations.
Highly qualified worker: With a minimum salary of €40,000 (research) or €54,000 (management), you can transition immediately.
